Position Summary: The Companion Care Provider offers non-medical support to clients in their homes, prioritizing emotional support, social interaction, and assistance with routine daily activities. This role enhances clients’ quality of life by encouraging independence, reducing isolation, and assisting with light household tasks and community access. The Companion Care Provider collaborates with family members and the care team to follow individualized care plans.
Key Responsibilities
Provide friendly companionship and emotional support: engage in conversation, reminiscence, and recreational activities tailored to client interests (reading, games, crafts, music).
Accompany clients to appointments, social outings, religious services, community programs and errands; provide safe mobility assistance and travel support.
Assist with light housekeeping tasks: tidying, laundry, dishes, vacuuming, bed-making, and maintaining a clean, safe living environment.
Prepare simple meals and assist with grocery planning and shopping as required; ensure adherence to dietary preferences and restrictions.
Assist with personal care tasks limited to non-medical support (e.g., prompting and reminding for bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care) as outlined in the care plan.
Monitor and report changes in client mood, behaviour, cognition, or physical condition to the supervisor; document visits and complete required reports.
Support medication reminders (non-administrative) and encourage adherence to prescribed routines.
Promote independence by encouraging participation in daily activities and hobbies; help clients maintain community connections.
Respect client privacy, dignity and cultural or spiritual practices; uphold professional boundaries at all times.
Follow infection prevention and control practices and safety procedures; report hazards or incidents promptly.
Attend team meetings, training sessions and participate in care planning as required.
Qualifications
Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience in companion care, home support, personal support, community support or related role preferred.
Valid criminal record check (vulnerable sector) and ability to provide clear documentation.
Up-to-date standard first aid and CPR certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle preferred for community-based assignments.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; patient, empathetic and respectful approach.
Ability to follow written and verbal care plans and to document care accurately.
Basic food-handling knowledge an asset.
Ability to lift/move light loads and assist with client mobility as required; physical ability to perform household tasks.
Fluency in English; additional language skills an asset depending on client needs.
Working Conditions
Client homes across urban and rural settings; travel between client locations may be required.
Flexible hours including daytime, evenings and weekends depending on client needs.
Exposure to household environments; tasks may include exposure to pets and allergens.
Compensation and benefits vary by role (hourly wage, mileage reimbursement, training opportunities.
